Sigh. This sort of thing makes me very upset. It certainly seems to be about the circus freak aspect - something I reject. It is inconceivable to me that someone would alter a child's height.

When I was a preteen in Canada I was taken to an endocrinologist to make sure it "wasn't something bad". This meant a two hour trip into Calgary about once a month. One of the doctors recommended my growth be halted, fortunately my parents objected. It turns out stunting growth, besides being just plain silly, is medically dangerous and there is very little effect - 2 to 4 cm maximum - as if that would make a difference. There is an excellent book that goes into people to try to change their child's growth. "Normal at any Cost" by Susan Cohen and Christine Cosgrove. It turns out it (particularly increasing the height of short boys) is a big business and the book is an window into medical ethics.

I'm in the camp that my height isn't a big deal. I honestly don't really think about it very much and neither do my friends. If someone gives me a hard time I know they are someone I may not want to associated with. There are some issues getting clothing and a few other things that fit, but that is a small price to pay. Mostly it is something I'm proud of and my friends seem to be proud of knowing me as well.

The best book I've seen for helping late preteens and teens feel good about themselves. It is written by someone who is different for kids with *any* differences - height being just one possibility. John Schwartz is a science and legal writer for the NY times and wrote "Short: Walking Tall When You're Not Tall at All" - although it is written from the point of view of a short male teen, it is applicable to anyone. I would recommend it way before Arianne's book.

I was on some committee or other several years ago, and our photo was published in the local paper. When I first saw it, I didn't even see myself. Then I realized that I was so much taller than the rest of them, that it looked like they were standing in front of a portrait of me, posted high on the wall.

This brings to mind memories of times I have knocked myself silly. I almost always wear a ball cap, and when I am really lucky, the brim strikes whatever-it-is and I am ducking before making contact, but it doesn't always work out that way.

The most aggravating thing in this line didn't actually involve a head injury, but an obstruction. I was in the process of taking a stress test - walking on the treadmill. As you know, the more you walk, the higher the treadmill gets. Some short person (obviously) had carefully placed the &@#*^#^!! thing below a fire sprinkler. By the time I started getting up there a ways, I was having to walk more and more bent over.
I finally told the doctor, "I give up." "Had enough?" he asked. "I could walk a long time more, but I've had enough of walking bent in half."

I'm a huge fan of threadless tees and one of the designs is *made* for tall and happy women! It really shows how I feel about my height

This is interesting Holli. I had that conversation with my sister in law over Christmas. She is under 5'2 and sometimes wears ridiculously tall heels when I'm around to "cut the difference". Noisy situations and even regular walks can be difficult so we usually find places to sit. I have problems hearing anyway, which makes it even worse.

This also effects my dating. I don't use height as a primary requirement as I would be excluding way too many guys who have good qualities. At the same time if a guy is a head shorter(or taller!) it is going to be a real problem as conversations when we're both standing can be awkward.

This is something I've wondered about. There are a lot of reasons for losing height and my doctor says most people start losing height sometime in their 30s, although it is usually very slow at first. Exercise and good posture are apparently important and, for later life getting enough calcium. My physician takes my height carefully every year. Since she has been doing this for four years my height hasn't really varied, but I'm 26 now. She said depending on how I take care of myself I can expect to lose from 1 to 3 cm by the time I'm 50. I would like to make that as small as possible.

So talking to your doctor makes sense and even getting a careful measurement and checkout your posture in a mirror. You're probably about what you have been years ago.

I live in København and people in the Netherlands and Scandinavia are seriously taller than those in the US or Southern Europe. The difference between Paris and Amsterdam is pretty amazing. Most of it is in the younger generation. I think the average guy in his 20s in the Netherlands is something like 186 cm and women are maybe 177. It is very easy to find guys who are over two meters.

The Dutch growth all came after WWII. There is a very interesting New Yorker article on the subject: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2004/04/05/040405fa_fact

Biking is a lifestyle and is encouraged. I don't have a car and don't want one. I have a commuter bike that is used in the snow and rain and a very nice touring bike for beautiful Sunday rides. In my town over 50% of the population rides a bike or walks to work and it shows. Danish women have the best butts and legs in the world:-) The guys are pretty impressive too. I'm shocked when I visit the US and Canada to see how heavy and out of shape people are - especially kids.

Italy is a wonderful place and finding the local food in the little towns is something I could do for the rest of my life. There are little restaurants that raise almost all of their food on their property and some even do their own wine. I am in Milan now on business. The big cities are great, but the countryside is fantastic.

I have a commuter bike that is used in the snow and rain and a very nice touring bike for beautiful Sunday rides. In my town over 50% of the population rides a bike or walks to work and it shows. Danish women have the best butts and legs in the world:-) The guys are pretty impressive too. I’m shocked when I visit the US and Canada to see how heavy and out of shape people are – especially kids.

Italy is a wonderful place and finding the local food in the little towns is something I could do for the rest of my life. There are little restaurants that raise almost all of their food on their property and some even do their own wine. I am in Milan now on business. The big cities are great, but the countryside is fantastic.

I get this quite a bit too. I think women who are tall enough that selection starts going down in stores feel tall or even too tall. Once you are at the point where clothing is very difficult to find you have to be resourceful on your own and don't worry as much - at least I don't. Mostly I don't think about being tall unless someone reminds me. I have a friend who is much taller than me and she doesn't think about it much either.

So I may not consider a 5'10 woman to be tall, but she may think about it more than me.

Hi there,

I run a new label, TallTallula.com, that aims to provide tall women with fashionable clothing that fits. You can visit my website at www.talltallula.com

My first range is a classic "mix and match" work wear collection, and I have already begun on the next collection, which includes dresses and casual wear.

Tall Tallula is a label that will endeavour to follow the needs of its clients and your feedback on future styles and garments is welcome.

From small beginnings we hope to grow to become a "go to" label for tall women everywhere.

The frustration of finding garments you would love to buy, but never fit, is a thing of the past.

Regards,
Fiona

I think it is great to have some sort of group for socializing and having fun. I tried a couple of tall clubs and they didn't work out for me. There were some guys who were bent on the "meet market" aspect and that turned me off. I do have a couple of tall friends to talk, complain and strategize with and that even led to a product for talls - so I liked hearing about the king sized bed story:-)

My close friends don't think about size and the social group I have the most fun with is a swing dance club. I'll probably be moving inside of a year and then I'll check out the tall club where I go..

This feels familiar. I don't do online dating as it just didn't produce interesting guys. My first date wasn't until I was 20 and it took awhile for me to get some self confidence. Now I'm 26 and do ok on that. With guys I tend to do the asking. I find there are guys who can't deal with you being taller, guys who don't care and a few guys who seem to be only attracted to that part of you and nothing more. Running from the last group is a good choice - they are incredibly shallow. I think there are enough in the middle group and I like meeting guys casually and seeing if they are interesting before something like a date.

At this point in my life I'm way too busy with my career to be too serious - I travel a lot. I found not being serious about it decreases the pressure to find someone enough that I have a much better time and had some nice dates for awhile. Your grandmother's advice is good:-)

thanks for your stories!

[...] Honestly, io9.com I don’t see how that’s an advantage. According to the article, everything scales, so basically I can run further using the same amount of energy a smaller person would use. I can get somewhere faster, which is also why I’ve taken to walking behind people so as not to get too far out ahead and lose them. Not that that’s a huge problem, because people can usually find me or my family in a crowd if we get separated. (I refer you to last years Saints game post.) [...]

You stopped running? I'm sorry but that's no excuse. I've been sleeping in a bed where I have to hang my legs over for at least 35 years and that hasn't stopped me from exercising. Actually, when you have the problems you indicated, you need the exercise even more. And I sure wish I had known you were "dumping" your mattress--we could have used it here. As I recall, it was a very good mattress. And, as you know, we tend to like Rube Goldberg type furniture.

I love the part about “[The candidate is] inquisitive enough to take advice from many conflicting perspectives, wise enough come to their own conclusion, and have the character to convince others that what they propose is the right thing to do.”

I've never heard of seatguru.com but I'm definitely going to check it out. I fly a lot! And so I've got lots of horror stories and a few nice stories too. That's why I had to share this one. It's not too often we hear the positive stuff. I wish I would've caught this lady's name!!

I probably should note that this airline was Delta. They really did me a favor because they didn't charge any additional charges for the exit seats like most airlines are doing nowadays. I see that you had trouble with them and I have had some trouble with them in the past, but this particular representative was so incredibly nice that she spoke volumes for the company. Most airlines have good people working for them but you do have to catch them on a good day.

I don't fly often, but when I have the experiences weren't always pleasant. One airline that lost my business is Delta. I went to a wedding in Hawaii in 2005. I live in Illinois, so this involved 3 planes each way. I am 6'8" and in clear need of an exit row or bulkhead seat. Every plane, practically every time, I had to argue with the people at Delta as to why I needed an exit row or bulkhead. Out of 6 flights only one time did I not have to convince the Delta employee I was dealing with that I needed an exit row or bulkhead seat. Luckily, it was because her brother was 6'6" and she understood my situation.

Now when I fly, I usually fly American Airlines. This is mainly because its one of the few airlines we have to choose from when flying for work. So far, I have not had an issue obtaining a bulk head or exit row seat. The secret catch to this is that I signed up a while back for the American Airlines Advantage program. This is more dedicated towards frequent flyer miles and such, but I do not fly enough to receive any benefits from miles. The benefit of the advantage program is that the day of my flight I can go online and reserve myself an exit row or bulk head seat. The advantage program is free too, its just a way to accumulate points and see/change your flight info.

In the past when I would fly, sitting in a bulk head or exit row seat usually meant waiting until you got to the air port so you can argue with whoever is at the ticket counter for your seat. As far as I am aware, most airlines do not allow the exit row seats to be reserved until the day of the flight. Having the ability to choose one of those seats as early as possible the day of your flight sure beats arguing with the airlines when you get to the airport.

After all that, it may sound like I am pro American Airlines. Honestly, if I had a choice I would probably choose another airlines. I have good experiences with Frontier Airlines. They were easy to deal with when it came to my tallness. They also have TV's for every seat which is a nice bonus. I have also heard great things about Jet Blue and Southwest. I have yet to fly either but will gladly try them when I fly for pleasure and not business.

I fly a lot on business and find the same thing. If you show up in person there is a good chance you can get an exit row or bulkhead seat if the airline does not change extra for them. Unfortunately some airlines do and some of these charges are high. What I was able to negotiate with my employer is they will pay for the upgrade for extra legroom if it exists and I fly business class on all long flights.

Of course doing a cartwheel for the clerk would be a nice thing:-)

A very good resource is http://www.seatguru.com , which will tell you about the seats on a particular flight and let you look at the differences. The European economy airlines for short flights are not good, so it is great you are using the train!

A friend of mine is two meters tall. She doesn't have a lot of money, so buying extra legroom is a hardship, but almost a necessity. If an airline doesn't charge for it she is always able to get a gate attendant to find a volunteer to switch, but that doesn't work if people have paid. She told me about a flight across the US where she was crunched into a small seat and then tried to stand in the aisle whenever she could, but the headroom wasn't enough for her to really stand up.

Wonderful!! I loved this. I am 50yrs old and 6'6 so I have had my share of interesting moments in life. Unfortunately, when I was in school we really didn't have much sports, and I had next to zero control over my gangley body. I live in Indy, but unfortunately there is not an active tall group here. I have emailed the listed person, but never get a response, and never see any events. Anyway, your blog is so cool, and I love it, we are all so lucky that it seems like we tall gals have the amazing brains, personality, and sense of humor. Keep up the good work girl.
This is awesome! It's really cool to see information on a new (to me) actor who is going to play a challenging but awesome role. The Mountain That Rides is a character that holds your attention, even if you hate him. The swirling hostility between himself and his brother, The Hound, just make the story that much richer! I cannot wait for Game of Thrones!!

Yeah, buying online can be really fidgety! For the price of a second hand sewing machine and some oversized mens clothes, you can make some really good stuff, that fits better and doesn't take as long as it does to wait for stuff to arrive.
Plus its way cheaper! You can't make a suit from it , well unless you are really talented but I liked the idea of making a dress from a pair of trousers :)
Like on here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S53nvkTiB8
but there are loads of good sites you can use

I grew up in Canada near Calgary and there was one tall shop. It was like what you described. Very expensive and not very fashionable. We couldn't afford it mostly so I went the alteration route, which sometimes was pretty funny. Now I live in Denmark and the average woman is much taller than in North America. Clothing sizes are a bit taller and it is not terribly difficult to find things unless you are spectacularly tall.

I have gotten into alterations and an older woman in my neighborhood considers me her special project and helps. She turns out to be really good at it and I am nearly fashionable:-)

Hi Holly,
You're right, there are a lot of taller people in the Twin Cities. My sister and brother live there, and I've also noticed a lot of tall people when I've been there. I've even noticed that people are taller around Mason City than most places. I always joke that people are taller there because it's so cold, they have to grow towards the sun to stay warm!

You have no idea how happy this post made me. I'm a Hawkeye as well, though I'm living over on the east coast these days (DC). Though I saw a handful of people here pull out Hawkeye apparel last weekend for the game, which was fun.
